the greenbrier hotel {a moment in time}

Happy Monday friends! Over the weekend I had a chance to catch up on some of my favourite online glossies, one of which was the latest issue if Matchbook Mag where I came across the article on the magnificent Greenbrier Resort.

Dorothy Draper famously designed all of hotel decor following World War II in her signature bold style, and in 2009 it underwent a refurbishment to restore the Hotel to its former glory.

Whilst I'm the first to admit these overly glamorous rooms are not really my thing, I was drawn to how splendidly charismatic they each are, and I can see how Dorothy Draper's signature style has influenced many designers today {Kate Spade; Lily Pulitzer, Cath Kidston to name a few} proving how cutting edge these designs were at the time.

I also noticed The Greenbrier hosts the Dorothy Draper school of decorating; a 5 day course where participants learn the "art of creating interiors and enhance their decorating abilities, find their own personality, and improve their lifestyle" - how wonderful!

What do you think of Dorothy Draper's signature style?

  1. It's not my style, but I wouldn't say no to a stay in the hotel, if only for that view. Have a wonderful week, Rachel! xo

  4. Whether it's one's style or not I find irrelevant; the main thing is to recognize a beautiful design as you've done here ;-)
    Thanks for sharing. I've seen that top photo to the right roaming around but didn't know where it came from.

  5. I forgot! I hope you get a hold of the Cranford series. I had no idea there was a season 2 so of course I only borrowed season 1 at the library.

  8. I have always loved her style. The vibrant colors always remind me of the Caribbean. Come on by my blog and let me know how you feel about the fashion trend of mullet hems.

  11. I love her style...but for me it's definitely better in small doses. I'd love to stay at that hotel and soak up all the glamor and opulence, but it would be too much for my home.

  12. I agree with you Rachel - it's really not to my taste and yet I find it captivating. I can fully appreciate it, without wanting to replicate it in my home.

  13. I live in West Virginia and have stayed at the Greenbrier. Yes, the style is over the top for most people's homes, but a stay at the Greenbrier is a wonderfully over the top experience and is not easily forgotten.

  14. I'm with you Rachel - I don't think design needs to be something you'd live in yourself to be able to appreciate it. And I think with hotels you want an experience and this would certainly provide that! I do love all the colours :)

  16. It is really very cool information. The hotel just located middle of downtown vancouver. So many restaurants and bars just 2 blocks away from the hotel.
